Fragrance Blending with Demeter

Nothing has ever stopped women (and men) around the world from layering different perfumes/colognes and creating different scent combinations. Except for the fact that most of us don't know what we're doing and might be a little nervous about accidentally smelling like an over-perfumed granny. With people talking about things like "top notes", it's easy to think that they're talking about music, and not the initial smell of a fragrance.

Demeter Fragrance Library has given us the tools to experiment and create our own scents with their Foolproof Blending Duos and Trios. With the assistance of the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network, I was lucky enough to test these and report my findings for my lovely viewers.

Demeter Foolproof Blending Duo Grass and Dirt

First, if you've never heard of Demeter, they are a family owned & operated business in the US, specializing in singular scents (over 300!). These singular scents are the top notes, middle notes and base notes, but unlike designer scents, they are individual (not blended), allowing individuals to wear each scent individually, or in their own personal combination.

The Foolproof Blending Duos come with two fragrances that can be worn separate or together in any combination to suit the wearer. This is a great way for beginners to test the waters in mixing different fragrances. Because the duos come in pre-made sets, you know they'll smell good together no matter what.

Available sets include:
  • Christmas Tree/Sweet Orange
  • Mulled Cider/Eggnog
  • Apple Pie/Vanilla Cake Batter
  • Pumpkin Pie/Sandlewood
  • Blackberry Pie/Green Tea
  • Chai Tea/To Yo Ran
  • Jasmine/Lavender
  • Clean skin/Sunshine
  • Patchouli/Baby Powder
They also had Grass/Dirt (which I received), but it's no longer listed on their website.

With the Foolproof Blending Duo, you also get a third bottle, some little pipettes and a mini funnel. This is so you can bring the inner chemist out and actually mix your own scent.

I received the Grass & Dirt Foolproof Blending Duo. Grass smelled like very sweet, fresh cut grass. It's actually a little too strong for my liking. Dirt on the other hand, has a nice woodsy scent to it. Like a dirt that you want to play in.

Contrary to his belief, supervision is not required for adults
I knew instantly that a 50/50 mix would not work for me. Grass was too overpowering. So on a test strip, I did 2 sprays of dirt and 1 of grass. That was perfect and reminded me of being younger and playing at the park by the baseball field and rolling down the grassy hill, or wiping out on my bike on a dirt path.

Demeter also offers Foolproof Blending Trios. These come with three fragrances that again, can be worn alone or layered to create your own personal scent. You also have the option of My Foolproof Blending Trios, which allows you to pick 3 fragrances from a catalog of 10 fragrances. Since these do not come with an empty bottle like the duo, they provide you with blending strips so you can test on those before applying onto your skin.

Demeter Foolproof Blending Trio Vanilla

Foolproof Blending Trios are currently available in:
  • Smoke/Incense
  • Water
  • Heavy Floral
  • Wood
  • Clean
  • Light Floral
  • Vanilla
I received Vanilla, which comes with Hawaiian Vanilla, Angel Food and Gingerbread. Gingerbread smells like a gingerbread I made while I was a kid (lots and lots of icing), so it's very over powering. Hawaiian Vanilla on the other hand is the most amazing smell ever. I have no way to describe it, but it's delicious. Angel Food is nice and very light. I loved the combination of Hawaiian Vanilla and Angel Food. (I also want to throw out there that the scent of vanilla is considered an aphrodisiac to males. Just a thought with Valentine's day next month)

Lastly, Demeter has Signature Blending Trios, which are sets of limited edition fragrances which are mostly seasonal themed. Keep an eye on their website for month/bi-monthly releases.

Of course, these are to help introduce you into blending/layering different scents. Nothing's stopping you from buying a couple different fragrances that don't come in these sets and experimenting on your own.

Here are a couple tips:
- Test fragrance combinations either on yourself or on pieces of papers before combining in a bottle. This way you have a better idea how how much to mix and the end results
- Don't excessively play/squeeze the pipettes. They are plastic and all four of mine broke at the seem. If you have a dropper, might be good to have that as a back up
- Have fun! There are no rules when it comes to blending fragrances
